Review (Courtesy of James Tweed, journalist, editor and consultant)
Question: What's a critically acclaimed bass baritone opera singer doing singing an album of jass and rhythm and blues songs?
Answer: Making a very good job of it!
For this offering, Jonathan veira has recorded 11 songs, including classics by Bob Dylan (Gotta Serve Somebody), Van Morrison (Have I Told You Lately That I Love You) and Louis Armstrong (What A Wonderful World). He also includes such lesser-known songs as American bluesman Eric Bibb's I Want Jesus To Walk With Me and a couple of original numbers. At times Veira sounds reminiscent of the late, great Lou Rawls fronting the Commitments; at others the aforementioned Van the Man. And given more than a little help from his friends - including slide guitarist extraordinaire Bryn Haworth, Phil Crabbe on drums, sax player Ben Castle, Mark Edwards on keyboards and producer Neil Costello - it's no wonder he's created an enjoyable mix of rollicking gospel blues and tender contemplation.
High: I Want Jesus To Walk With Me; accompanied solely by acoustic slide guitar, beautiful.
Low: Veira ought to get out and do this more often, but probably won't be able to give up the day job! |
'All That Matters'

Review: (Courtesy of Re:fresh Books & Resources)
Eclectic, chocolate voiced opera singer Jonathan Veira continues to dip in and out of the CCM scene with jazz and blues influenced albums. 'All That Matters' is his best yet.
Opening with the cheeky gospel of Show A Little Mercy, it goes on to yet another version of Redman's Blessed Be Your Name. The title track, All That Matters, is a gorgeous Elton John-esque ballad about the certainty of Jesus in a transient world. Silky trumpet from Raul D'Oliviera drips over the liquid bass and Zero 7 funk of In The Calm and Love Song, the music matching the tranquility of the lyrics, and the lyrical high point is the beautiful, politically-tinged flag-waver Only A Dream, about Christ bringing true peace in our time.
Producer Neil Costello wisely stands back from a singer and band clearly enjoying themselves. The album is split roughly into two parts: after the smoky atmosphere of the first half the second half focuses more on straightforward worship to match anything by Graham Kendrick, reflecting two sides of this worshipper/performer.
This is one of the coolest albums of the year. |

'An Audience with Jonathan Veira' - CCMP CD-02
Anyone who has experienced being in the audience at one of these special evenings with Jonathan Veira will know that it is a treat not to be missed. Proving beyond doubt that JV is as versatile a singer and musician as you could hope to find, the songs on this CD reflect the diversity of his talent.
These songs are a selection of the songs that JV performs in his One Man Show. He has always enjoyed performing a wide variety of styles and on this album he gets the opportunity to enjoy himself and sing some of his favourite songs from Billy Joel to Gershwin to Puccini.
The ever-popular 'Summertime' gives air to JV's piano skills as well as his voice which is then exercised to the full with Dinizetti's 'Me Voglio fa'na Casa'. Elton John's collaboration with Bernie Taupin to produce one of their most popular works 'Your Song' is given the unique JV treatment (listen below) while the jolly 'I Got Plenty of Nuttin'' (listen below) sees the character of this entertaining performer brought to the fore. The lively and fun 'Boogie Woogie', also arranged by JV, is followed by Randy Edelman's 'You'. The final track on the CD does the same as his last of the evening live... leaves you wanting more! Well, we would all echo the sentiments of 'Let There Be Love', wouldn't we! With another 5 tracks with just as much variety, more is exactly what you get.
If you have been there, this will bring back some wonderful memories. If you haven't, you'll want to be!

Rhythms of the Heart
After the outstanding success of 'Life & Soul', another feast of music for JV fans. 'Rhythms of the Heart' (ICC727) has become every bit as successful as the previous album.
Rhythms Of The Heart is an album of understated and natural arrangements, supplemented beautifully by a string quartet, natural piano and brass. Full of intimate and heartfelt performances, Jonathan mixes classic hymns such as How Great Thou Art and The Day Thou Gavest, with modern worship songs, many written by Paul Field. The album also features the brand new song, The Promise of His Grace, written by Jonathan and Paul.
